  • How long do I wear sunglasses after Lasik?

While sunglasses do provide some barrier from foreign bodies/particles, they're mostly there to help with glare in the immediate post-op period. That being said, generally you only need to wear your sunglasses until that glare dissipates. If you are still suffering from significant glare or other symptoms after some time, I would advise to make another appointment with your LASIK surgeon to discuss possible causes and/or remedies. Finally, as always, take all of your post-op medications as directed and return for all of your post-op visits with your surgeon. Hope this helped. Take care and have a good day, Eric Downing, MD READ MORE

  • Can dry eye be cured in children?

Of course! You’d treat it just the same way you’d treat it in adults—artificial tears. Problem (as you may know) is that kids don’t usually tolerate eye drops as well as us adults. If they make their eyes feel better though, they’ll usually be on board. One note is that if they itch, there may be an allergy component there, which can definitely exacerbate dry eye symptoms. If you try regular artificial tears, which you can purchase over the counter at any drugstore, but are still having symptoms, I would recommend he or she be evaluated by an eye doctor. Hope that helps, take care, Eric Downing MD READ MORE

  • What causes sharp stabbing pain in the eye?

There are many reasons you could have sharp, stabbing pains in the eye. Although likely benign such as dry eye, there are more serious causes such as infection or a retained foreign body. I would recommend you follow up with an eye care provider at your convenience, especially if it doesn’t resolve or worsens. Best regards, Eric Downing, MD READ MORE

  • How can I moisten my eyes naturally?

The best thing is to just use artificial tears. You can purchase them without a prescription at the drug store. If you’d like to minimize exposure to preservatives, you can buy the preservative-free tears, but that usually isn’t necessary if you are only using them 1-4 times/day. They are quite a bit more expensive. Some common brands or Refresh and Systane, but the generic should be just fine for most people. If that doesn’t solve the problem, I’d recommend coming in to see an eye doctor and explore the issue further. Regards, Eric Downing, MD READ MORE
