My son was diagnosed with Autism when he was two. While going through the therapies, his therapists pointed out that I am also on the spectrum. I was missed.

What is it like being an autism mom? The ups, the downs, and the emotional struggle.

I love my little sweetheart. He causes me no problems. However, I hate having to explain that he is Autistic every single time I take him places. I hate having to make it clear that he doesn't talk yet, because it should be obvious. People get offended when he doesn't respond. Even adults get offended. It happens all the time. I always wonder if this will emotionally affect him. He's three years old. I don't feel I should have to do this. That's because even though he can't express himself yet, he understands me.

What fears do you face as you raise your child?

I fear that public school may not be the right place for him. That's a shame, because he really likes being around other people. I wish we lived in a more accepting world. I will keep him in his pre-school program so he can get his therapies, but eventually I know I will need to pull him out and either home school him or send him to a Montessori school.

What do you wish other moms knew about what you go through?

I have already faced a lot of discrimination. A lot of unfounded discrimination. It's almost like organizations are afraid of including him, out of fear that they might get sued or something. It's extremely painful, and I don't know how anyone could do that to a little boy. He's still a toddler. The expectations are way too high.

Do you have other autism mommies who have inspired you?

Yes. I have a friend who started throwing sports themed parties. It's socially acceptable to stim during a sport's game. This way, her son won't ever feel left out.
