Who in your life has been affected by autism and how?

My daughter Mia will be 10 in June she has severe autism, epilepsy and high anxiety. She is verbal and even though she can’t really speak, she still was diagnosed late. She was nearly 5, all because she is a girl and was too happy.

Where is your loved one on the spectrum?

Severe autism

What do you wish people would understand about autism?

People often look at her and because she's beautiful and doesn’t look special they just think she is a brat when she babbles loudly or banging on windows or the table, which makes me so mad I just wanna punch them out, but I don’t because I always try to stay clam to keep her calm because she feeds of my energy. She loves music and loves her family it’s what makes her always smile. People with autism just need a little patience and compassion from the world around them and for people know that autism doesn’t come with a look, they don’t need to look special I wish people who like to stare and laugh could walk in their shoes for a day. I write this poem of my beautiful uncut diamond words through her eyes.

my name is Mia

i have diamond eyes of blue

god created me

he made me unique

he called me an uncut diamond

he gave autism

A because I’m amazing

U because I’m unique

T because I’m talented

I because im intelligant in my own way

S because the shining light of god is on me

M because I’m mia and my lord loves me
