Vanessa Miller Autism Spectrum Disorder

I was diagnosed with Adult Attention Deficit Disorder, back in 2005. Some things were going on with me, like major mood swings, my husband urged me to find out, and I did.

Who in your life has been affected by autism and how?

My son, who is now 23yrs old. He is a big challenge. He's minimally verbal, meaning he can speak, but not in conversation. However, he has been known to answer or respond to a question with an appropriate answer. Surprises all of us, even him.

Where is your loved one on the spectrum?

He's high on the severity list. He is very ECHOLALIC, which means he will repeat things over and over. He is very impulsive and has major fixations, such as picking hair, fuzzies, stickers etc., off people. And to those who don't know him, his size (6'1" 275lbs)mis very intimidating. But for the people who do know him, if they just stay calm and see what he's after and let him get it, he's very calm and gentle. It's only when he's agitated that he will explode and charge anything and anybody that tries to stop him. It's because of this reason, that we don't take him out in public.

What do you wish people would understand about autism?

I wish that the average person learn about it, and feel free to ask us parents questions. Knowledge is power, and you also erase any fears you may have when you ask questions and learn about it. I get angry when people are ignorant and assume the worst and make rude comments. If you don't know a person's situation, either ask or just keep quiet.
