Deidre Tranter Fibromyalgia

I was diagnosed back in 2000 for Fibromyalgia. I was 40 years old. I started out with muscle pain in my thighs and it gradually spread everywhere else except my lower legs and lower arms. I was diagnosed with Arthritis back in my early 30's in my hands and knees. Everything else I have, I have spent a lot of money on trying...

What lifestyle changes have you made since your diagnosis?

I quit my last job after working off and on in a lot of pain for 18 years. Once in a while I was in what I would call a remission. Didn't hurt for a while. Then it would hit me again and hang around for a while. Since I have quit, I try to do just enough so I don't over do it and hurt for days. Get your rest. You have to be able to take a break. Take a walk or something to get rid of stress. I volunteer for things where I don't have to be there if I am not doing well but I can still help some and I am not sitting at home. I am not hurting near as much but when that bad stress hits me, I am a mess. I have gone to an exercise facility and done some of that to keep active. I would rather be in a swimming pool because it's not as hard on joints.

What impact have these changes had on your health and state of mind?

I have not hurt as much, or as often, because I do take a break and a nap if I need one. My stress level is up because I have bills to pay and no income to pay them. It is a long wait for disability. Right now, I am in pain.

What advice do you have for others who are trying to incorporate these changes into their lives?

I just hope they have a very understanding mate that helps them. Have a savings you can use to pay your bills for at least 18 months while you are waiting on disability before you do quit your job. Look on Indeed for jobs you may be able to do from home or that will work with you when you have bad days. Have healthcare.gov and an accidental plan to help pay for your medical bills. You can also get papers from the hospital that can get you help to pay for your medical bills. Some grants can help also if you can get one. They do have some that help with personal issues and you don't have to pay them back.
