What happens if results are abnormal?
The doctor might order therapy without doing another test if the findings are abnormal. Since HSTs can only be used for obstructive sleep apnea, polysomnography might still be advised though if initial findings are okay.
In case the diagnosis is obstructive sleep apnea, the patient can be referred to an ENT or ear, nose, and throat doctor to correct any obstructions in the nose or throat. An assessment by a cardiologist or neurologist might also be needed if central sleep apnea is detected.
