Talking to Someone at Different Stages of Alzheimer's
Maintaining normalcy
Since isolation for both the patient and their caregiver is quite common, especially at this stage of the game, it’s important to keep the patient included and active. Try to keep things normal and try not to remind them that they might not remember something. In other words, if attending a birthday party and the patient doesn’t understand why they are there, don’t say: “Remember? We are here to celebrate Jenny’s 5th birthday.” Instead, try something like “Isn’t it a nice day to celebrate Jenny’s birthday?”
Try to get them involved in group activities. Look for specialized programs for Alzheimer’s patients at community centers. Go for walks and help them do the things they used to love doing, such as baking or crafting. In other words, keep them busy, active and social.
