Despite our knowledge of the disease, and how to slow down its symptoms, we still don’t know what the actual cause behind Alzheimer’s is. We know that it’s underlying mechanic consists of the destruction of both neurons and their synapses, but we don’t actually understand what triggers said destruction in the first place. There are several risk factors that may contribute to developing the disease, such as age, inheritance, repeated injury to the head (such as in professional football players or in boxers), and the presence of heart disease. Other factors that might also affect the incidence of the disease include infrequent social engagement and interaction, as well as infrequent intellectual stimulation (such as in those who abandon school and don’t seek to learn elsewhere).
