  • Can you put a bridge on an implant?

You can put a bridge between 2 implants. READ MORE

  • Can you get anesthesia to have sealants added?

You can, but sealants are placed on the surface of the back teeth to help prevent decay. Typically, there are no dental hand pieces involved in treatment, so it is very benign. It would seem very unnecessary to have anesthesia for this procedure. READ MORE

  • What do you do when your denture falls out?

For the short term, you can use dental adhesives to help them stay in. I would recommend that you go to a dentist as your current denture may need to be relined or you may need to have a new one made depending upon the age of the denture. Over time, bone loss continues so that changes the fit of the denture. Your dentist can evaluate that and along with you, determine the best option. I hope that helps! Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • How long does it take to get a full mouth of dental implants?

There is no one or simple answer to this question. There are a number of things to factor into the time frame including, but not only: -Your current dental status -How much bone you have to be able to place implants -Desired restoration type -Will there be multiple specialties involved in your case and more. Your best bet is to go to your dentist to discuss your desires and based on that, a plan can be developed with an approximate time line. Sincerely, Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • Can you have implants with receding gums?

Yes, but it would be important to address the cause of the recession. Is it periodontal disease, poor occlusal (biting) forces? Schedule an exam with your dentist for a more thorough examination. Sincerely, Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • Do gums grow around dentures?

No, gums do not grow around dentures. Typically, there is bone loss with dentures and the tissue follows the bone. READ MORE

  • How do you floss under braces?

Your orthodontic office should have gone over this with you. You need to use a floss threader with floss in order to get under the braces and between the teeth. It is difficult to explain in written words. Here is a link to a video that may help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_vHsOGiIo4 A waterpik is also very helpful with braces. If you still have questions, I would return to your orthodontist's office. In health, Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • Is it normal to have pain after a tooth implant?

Yes, it is normal to have some discomfort. Based on the responses from my patients, the discomfort is mild and is alleviated with Advil. Implant placement is a surgery and as with nearly all surgeries, there is typically pain/discomfort associated with such a procedure. That being said, if you are concerned, I would recommend you call or visit the dentist office where the implant was placed so that the dentist can evaluate. Sincerely, Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • How long does numbing last after a filling?

How long anesthesia lasts is patient dependent. People metabolize anesthetic, and really all medications, differently. In addition, the length of anesthesia is also dependent on they type of anesthetic being used. A general guideline is 2-4 hours. If you exercise after rx, assuming you are not having surgery, this will help the anesthetic wear off more rapidly. Sincerely, Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • Can I use toothpaste after a wisdom teeth extraction?

Yes, you can use toothpaste. Just use care when brushing near the extraction sites. READ MORE

  • Can a tooth infection affect your whole body?

Yes, a tooth infection can absolutely negatively affect your entire body. And if there is an abscess, if the abscess is untreated, that could result in hospitalization. Sincerely, Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • How do you know if your filling is infected?

If you have swelling or pus coming from the gum tissue, that indicates infection. If you do not have those symptoms, it does not mean that the tooth is not infected. You need to go to your dentist so that an X-ray and exam can be completed and verify the status of the tooth. READ MORE

  • Do braces damage teeth?

Braces do not damage teeth. However, it is important for you to be extra diligent with your own home care. There can be damage to the exposed tooth structure due to lack of good oral home care. READ MORE

  • Do fixed retainers stop teeth from moving?

Yes, a fixed retainer will stop the teeth that are fixed from moving. Typically, fixed retainers are placed on the lower front 6 teeth and the upper 2-6. Sincerely, Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • How long does dental bonding last on front teeth?

There is no set answer to this question. There are many factors that determine the longevity such as like how your teeth fit together, your habits (nail biting, clenching, grinding), the extent of the bonding and more. I am sorry I cannot provide a more definitive answer. Sincerely, Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • How do you get rid of an infection in your gums?

You need to make an appointment with a dentist so that a diagnosis can be made. Certain infections can result in an emergency visit to the hospital, so I do not suggest putting this off. Sincerely, Dr. Rankin READ MORE

  • Which straightens your teeth better?

Both treatments are effective options. I would suggest that you see an orthodontist for an evaluation so that together you can make the best decision for your specific case. Sincerely, Jennifer READ MORE

  • What could be the cause of my dry mouth?

There can be a variety of causes when it comes to dry mouth. The most common is from taking medications. So, if you you are taking any medications, look at the potential side effects. Even over the counter medications can cause drying. How much WATER are you drinking? I am talking straight up water, not juices, coffee, tea. You should consume 1/2 your body weight in water daily and more when you exercise. A few other things to consider are mouth rinses - if alcohol based, avoid; drinking alcoholic beverages in general, especially if you are not balancing with water in between. If you have looked at the above possible causes and none of them relate to you, you may want to consider and exam with your physician to rule out any systemic causes. Hope this helps! • What procedures require an oral surgery follow up?

That all depends upon how you are having the tooth replaced. If you are replacing a tooth with a bridge, then there is no follow up. If you are having an implant placed, then you will need to follow up with whoever places the implant. READ MORE

  • Can I drink coffee after tooth extraction?

Yes, you can, but be careful of the temperature so as not to burn the soft tissues in your mouth. READ MORE
