Leland H. Webb, MD, FACS, is the plastic surgeon, founder, and owner of Webb Plastic Surgery, a cosmetic and reconstructive surgery practice dedicated to meeting the goals of our patients in the greater Phoenix area. Dr. Webb garnered his medical training from the world-class institutions of Vanderbilt University and the Mayo Clinic. He is well-published in several medical journals spanning the disciplines of medicine and surgery. He also maintains academic appointments at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and the University of Arizona. When he's not helping patients, Dr. Webb enjoys teaching residents and collaborating with peers and other leading plastic surgeons.

Realistically, the 10 year replacement mark is a recommendation based on the fact that implants have an increasingly growing risk of rupture each year. If your implants are doing well and there are no issues then you can leave them in place. Consider that if they are sailine, a rupture would result in a smaller breast and subsequent contracture of that breast which may make replacement difficult. There is no rush or urgency at this time, however, it may be some thing to start considering and thinking about changing them out in the near future.

Sometimes you can hurt for sometime. Depending on how the augmentation was done, often the muscle is lifted and this takes time for the muscle to stop spasming and find its new expanded place. It also depends on how larger implants are. I usually tell people that it can take up to six weeks for a lot of that discomfort to go away, however, every day should get better. Furthermore as time goes on massage and pocket softness can help with that discomfort. What you’re experiencing right now sounds very normal. I hope you feel better soon.

We usually discuss with patients that they will have decreasing swelling for a total of one year. It sounds like you are on the right track. Be confident comfortable that it should get smaller with time due to the swelling reduction over this period.

Unfortunately the only way to permanently remove them is to permanently remove that skin by cutting it out. However, not every scenario can be prevented, and getting restful sleep is always a positive thing. I think, try your best to sleep in an upright position for as long as you can and discuss with your surgeon when they feel comfortable with you sleeping on your side.
