Is Dementia Linked to Abnormal Magnesium?

What happened with the blood samples?

From the time the blood samples were collected, to the time the follow up ended, there was an interval of 8 years. However, there were only a few changes recorded. Out of the 9,569 participants in the study, a small 823 of them developed dementia. Another critical development was that 662 of the 823 patients developed Alzheimer’s disease.

Another category of patients, the ones with low serum magnesium levels, also developed dementia. This category consisted of approximately 1,700 participants, where 160 of them developed dementia. This produced a rate of 10.2 per 1,000 person-years. The counterpart category of patients, the ones with high serum magnesium levels, also developed dementia.

This category consisted of approximately 1,700 candidates also, and approximately 180 of them developed dementia. This produced a rate of 11.4 per 1,000 person-years. For candidates whose serum magnesium levels fell in between the high and low levels, 102 of them developed dementia. This set of patients was about 1,300, which produced a rate of approximately 7.8 per 1,000 person-years.
